The importance of a sleep test

Sleep disorders can have serious health consequences. Your sleep test will help your doctor diagnose and, if necessary, provide safe and effective treatment for your sleep problems.

How long a test lasts
The overnight sleep study is usually completed by 6:00 a.m., but may vary. If you must leave earlier than 6:00 a.m., please let us know when you make your appointment and remind the sleep technologist when you arrive for your study.

Checklist of items to remember
Please bring the following items to the sleep center. We will provide a towel and all bedding, including sheets, blankets and pillows. If we can assist you further, please do not hesitate to ask.
- Your medications Make sure to bring all the medications you ordinarily take during the hours you will be in the laboratory. In other words, if you are staying in the lab during the evening and overnight bring all your evening, night and morning medications. If you are staying overnight and during the next day also bring your morning and afternoon medications. Do not forget to bring medications that you may need but do not necessarily take routinely. These might include such medications as inhalers for asthma, nasal sprays or pills to treat nasal congestion due to allergies, pain medications, cough syrup, or nitroglycerin for angina. The laboratory does not stock medications and sleep technologists are not authorized to administer medications, even pills. You, the patient must take them or an accompanying family member or caregiver must administer them.
- Your insurance card or information Make sure that we have received a managed care referral from your insurance company before your appointment.
- Comfortable sleepwear Do not bring silk sleepwear. Two-piece items or sleepwear that buttons down the front are best. It is important that you wear a top to keep the monitoring equipment in place. A T-shirt is fine.
- Your favorite pillow If you would like, you can bring a favorite pillow or blanket (even teddy bears are allowed).
- Toiletries Bring your own comb, hairbrush, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, and shaving materials.
- Clothes Bring a change of clothes for the next day.
- Your own medications No medications can be supplied or administered by laboratory personnel.
- Your completed questionnaire If you were asked to complete a questionnaire, please fill it out before your appointment and bring it with you.
- Reading or viewing material You may bring a book, magazine, or other reading material. A TV and VCR are also available in your laboratory bedroom.
- Shower shoes Shower facilities are available. If you wish to shower in the morning, please bring shower shoes.

If you are excessively sleepy, please arrange to have a relative or friend drive you to and from the laboratory. If this is not possible, use a taxi or other public transportation.
